President Goodluck Jonathan in Lagos on Thursday urged Nigerians to join forces with the Federal government in its transformation programmes to enhance national development.
Jonathan made the call at the public presentation of a book, “The Nigerian of Our Dream”, adding that the problems of insecurity, poor power supply, poverty and the lack of infrastructure needed the support and understanding of Nigerians to be solved.
Represented by the Minister of Information, Mr Labaran Maku, the president traced the country’s under-development to years of military incursions in the development process.
``We cannot continue to express hopelessness in this country, Nigeria. We all should believe in the ideals of our founding fathers.
``We must be very sober to understand that Nigeria is a young nation; we can do better in the years ahead,’’ he said.
Jonathan restated the government’s commitment to addressing the country’s socio-economic problems, through encouragement of public-private sector investment.
He said the government was working hard to fix the railway transportation system and steady power supply in the country.
``We are prepared to promote Public-Private sector participation in developing our infrastructural needs.
``Also, we cannot be happy seeing a country without steady power supply,’’ the president said.
A human rights lawyer, Mr Femi Falana, had in a lecture, ``Policing the Nigeria of Our Dream'', said it was imperative for the Federal Government to begin to pursue the ideals of Nigeria’s founding fathers.
He urged the government to beef up security at its borders, airports, motor parks and courts.
The author of the 300-page book, Chief Sam Igbe, said it was important for Nigerians to always coordinate their views toward the country’s development.
Igbe urged Nigerians to apply their knowledge and experiences in national development, irrespective of cultural and religious background.
