Fashola names Ikeja Millennium Estate after Anyaoku

LAGOS State government has commissioned and named a 76 units of four-bedroom housing estate, which was built from a former refuse dumpsite, in honour of the former Secretary General of the Commonwealth, Emeka Anyaoku, in Ikeja GRA, Lagos.

When speaking at the commissioning of the Millennium Estate, which is now to be referred to as the Emeka Anyaoku Millennium Housing Estate, the Lagos State governor, Mr Babatunde Fashola, said the successful construction of the estate was synonymous with building treasure from trash, especially since the site where the estate now stands was once a refuse dumpsite.

“The story of this estate is similar to bringing treasure out of trash and it shows the urban generation and renewal drive of this administration. A few years ago, the site on which this estate is built was an eyesore located right in the heart of Ikeja GRA. But today, we all stand to appreciate a decision that was made by our past cabinet which, after much deliberations, insisted that the old dilapidating eight blocks of flat formerly standing here must be demolished to give way for the estate commissioned today,” Fashola remarked.

When speaking about the choice of Anyanoku, the Lagos State governor said that the former Commonwealth leader was chosen because of the belief of the Fashola-led administration that Anyanoku had made numerous contributions to the development and unity of the nation before, during and after his days as the scribe of the Commonwealth.

When showing his gratitude to the Lagos State for the gesture, Anyanoku, who declined to comment on any other issue, said the estate was another landmark achievement of the Fashola-led administration, which he insisted, had been exemplary.

In the meantime, the Commissioner for Housing, Mr Bosun Jeje, revealed that in order for the estate to be made functional and self-sustaining, complimentary infrastructure, such as well paved network of roads, car parks, mini-water works, electricity and properly landscaped environment had been provided.
