Officials from the International Criminal Court are on their way
to Rwanda to pick up Congolese war lord Bosco Ntanganda, URN has
learnt. Johnnie Carson, the US Assistant Secretary for the Bureau of
African Affairs disclosed this in a video link to journalists on
Wednesday evening.
Ntanganda surrendered to the US embassy in Kigali
on Monday this week and asked to be transferred to the ICC in The Hague.
The rebel leader is believed to have been under the protection of the
M23 rebel faction loyal to Bishop John Marie Runiga.
Runiga’s faction fled into Rwanda on Saturday
after suffering defeat to the M23 rebel faction led by Brigadier Sultan
Makanga at Kibumba.
Mr Carson says that it is important to accommodate Ntaganda's request to be transferred to the ICC.
Both, the United States are Rwanda are not signatories to the Rome Statute that established the ICC.
In 2006, ICC issued an arrest warrant for
Ntaganda, who was then a General in DR Congo’s national army for crimes
committed against civilians in Ituri region between 2002 and 2003.
Ntaganda was also accused of recruiting child soldiers in North Kivu in the 2012 rebellion.
